On April 20, 2026, a panel held at the university examined recent developments in Iran in a comprehensive and in-depth manner.
Organized by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of History, and the History Research Society, the panel titled “What Is Happening in Iran? Life, Politics, and War” took place at Prof. Dr. Sabahattin Zaim Conference Hall at 2:00 PM. The event attracted strong interest from academics and students, and addressed Iran’s internal dynamics, social transformation, and regional impact in detail.
One of the speakers, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Turgay Şafak from Istanbul Medeniyet University, discussed Iran’s political structure within its historical context, explaining how the post-revolutionary governance model has evolved over time. Şafak highlighted key issues such as the demands of the younger population, the impact of economic sanctions on society, and tensions in state-society relations.
Iran expert Dr. Mehmet Koç focused on Iran’s foreign policy and regional strategies. He evaluated the country’s military and diplomatic moves in the context of shifting power balances in the Middle East, its relations with neighboring countries, and ongoing conflicts. He also անդրlined how tensions with global actors have influenced Iran’s domestic economic and social structure.
The panel was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Alanoğlu, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Throughout the session, speakers engaged in mutual discussions, presenting different perspectives. An interactive atmosphere emerged during the Q&A session, with particular attention given to current protest movements in Iran, debates on freedom of expression, and regional security issues.
The event was also attended by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Selçuk Sağır and Rector’s Advisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Özalper. Drawing significant participation from both academic staff and students, the panel concluded after the Q&A session.
It was emphasized that the comprehensive discussions during the panel contributed to a deeper and broader understanding of current developments in Iran among the participants.
