The event titled “Who is Afraid of Philosophy” organized by our university’s Department of Philosophy on December 24, 2024 took place in an interactive and inspiring atmosphere. The event introduced the Critical Thought and Philosophy Society, which is currently in the process of being established, and provided a preliminary application for future philosophical events.
The event, which was held with the participation of the faculty members of the Department of Philosophy, offered a thought-provoking and questioning experience for the students. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümit Kartal discussed basic concepts such as “promise,” “persuasion,” “trust,” and “human nature” through two short stories. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Kantarcı Bingöl brought up the question of “Who am I?”, allowing the students to think deeply about individual and social identity.
The event also touched on social issues, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Fatih Işık drew attention to gender inequalities and received the students’ opinions on this issue. Res. Asst. Nefise Barak questioned the "scapegoat" metaphor with the participants through Ursula K. Le Guin's famous work "Those Who Walked Away from Omelas". Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ümit Kartal, who made the closing speech of the event, emphasized that the activities of the Critical Thought and Philosophy Society will continue to increase and that these activities are open to all students. He also stated that the main purpose of the society is to organize interactive activities that encourage students to think critically.
